The Blood Countess rises again for today's slice of Gothic humour.
Some characters from history were just so cruel that a little bit of humour can be a welcome distraction from the reality of their actions. We love Jessica Oyhenart-Ball's playful take on the Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory- what do you think?
In case you're unfamiliar with the legend, Bathory was a 16th century Hungarian countess who not only took pleasure in torturing her female house staff, but was also believed to bathe in the blood of virgins in order to preserve her beauty.
We like how Jessica's subtle approach to the tale, using Gothic humour to hint at Elizabeth's darker deeds. The lighting here is brilliant too, with flickering candles casting a rather romantic light over something really quite grim.
